National Executing Agency: Asociación Sotz'il

In January 2022, DGM Guatemala officially launched its country project with the objective of making a significant contribution to national forest conservation and emission reduction efforts. Through its direct participation mechanisms and innovations, the project will recognize and empower the role of IPLCs and overcome structural barriers to their livelihoods and effective forest management.

Since project inception, DGM Guatemala has made significant progress in establishing a governance system with five representatives from each of the three networks that make up the National Steering Committee (ANOFCG, MICCG, RED-PINEP), developing project documents, and initiating discussions on subproject geographies. In its early stages, DGM Guatemala has focused on providing support for COVID-19 relief, identifying strategic partnerships, and strengthening articulation between the three NSC networks.

“This is an innovative mechanism for the following reasons: it directly engages local communities and Indigenous Peoples, and provides direct access to these funds to be able to promote the various struggles and demands that we have as Indigenous people and communities. Being able to reach people, in their own territories, is a call for us to look towards Indigenous peoples and communities that for many decades, for many centuries, have cared for and preserved mother earth and all the elements it is made up of.”
