National Executing Agency: WWF Peru

DGM Saweto Peru officially closed out in June 2021 with significant accomplishments. Some of the important results on the ground include the project’s success in titling 230,239 hectares of indigenous land, recognition, and registration of 253 indigenous communities and support to 44 indigenous enterprises. The NSC recognized the DGM Saweto Peru as a model for implementing land titling processes in Peru, and that it is the only project that has advanced in this respect in a sustained manner. More than 10,620 families have benefited from the project's actions.

Project Highlight

Chocowarmi is an association of indigenous women entrepeneurs from the Copal Sacha Native community in San Martin. This group submitted a subproject proposal to DGM Peru aimed at strengthening the production and marketing of chocolates from agroforestry plots. The Association had been working since 2014 but faced two challenges that prevented it from boosting the business: 1) They did not have basic equipment for the processing, handling and storage of cocoa-based products such as paste and other derivatives and 2) The plant did not have a drainage system to reduce the risks of product contamination.

With DGM Saweto Peru, Chocowarmi was able to install air conditioning equipment, a cooler for product transfer, a laminated paper sealer, a guillotine to cut laminated paper, a laser thermometer to take the infrared chocolate temperature and the drainage system through PVC pipes. The implementation of the subproject (January 2018 to June 2019) under the DGM Saweto, contributed to income generation for 25 families in the community and supported the empowerment of women and young partners in productive activities, obtaining greater access to resources and the valorization of their work. In 2018, Chocolate with Shica Shica with 45 percent cocoa, received the award as "Best Innovative Product" at ExpoAmazon Ucayali."

“Any work or project that is carried out within indigenous people’s territories must respect and follow their governance because the indigenous peoples have a form of government. In the field, indigenous organizations have led this entire process. [The DGM] is a project led by indigenous peoples, developed by indigenous peoples, and implemented by indigenous peoples.”
